Neutral pelvis ---- the basis of ab workouts.

What do ab workouts consist of in Pilates?

The majority of Pilates exercises include the use of abs, one ab or the other ab or more but particularly the deep abdominal.

Yes , there are specific exercises for abs but all abdominal exercise work uses the core abdominal but get this ------it never works alone. It works with the other core muscles to create surprise surprise – a strong core to back up those outer abdominals. This is the famous Pilates core.

The deep abdominal is the great flattener, the one below the other abdominals

So lets find this muscle on your body. The road to this is neutral pelvis. The pelvis is made up of the bones above the legs and connected to the spine. Neutral pelvic position is most optimum for the body for exercising and moving. It is a position of equilibrium and stability for the muscles and whole body.

Stand in front of a full length mirror. Turn sideways on and look. Look at your butt ? Is it tucked under or sticking out behind or in the middle. Now soften your knees and tuck that butt under. That’s not neutral pelvis. Now stick that butt out behind you without shifting anything else and you should get quite a curve in the lower back. That is not neutral pelvis. Now move your pelvis back and forward from one to the other and as you do make the movement smaller and smaller until you hit a stable place in between. That is neutral pelvis. Make sure your upper body is bang on top of it for a nice straight body. This also may not be what you are used to. If your body is used to tucking that pelvis under or sticking that butt out you may not find this easy. If neutral pelvis is where your pelvis is usually you are starting off well.

The deep ab works best in neutral pelvis and so do the other abs. In fact the whole system works better .
