Dancing Gymnastics

Here are two fields of expertise that Pilates exercise can make a huge difference in. It can be the difference between black and white, bad and good, mediocre to spectacular.

Why?

Let’s have a look at these two fields. Both are concerned with the performance of the physical body. Gymnastics comes purely from that whereas dance is an art that requires a high level of physical performance from the body.

I myself am a dancer, dance instructor, an artist. Art is a communication the vehicles of that communication in dance is the body. Hence maximum performance, flexibility, poise and control is required of that body.

A gymnast requires maximum performance, flexibility, poise and control of that body. One needs to know how to gain flexibility.

So you see, this is where dancing comes together with gymnastics. They require the same physical ability although different types of physical ability for different areas.

As a dancer I was amazed at how much physical difference Pilates made to my ability. That is how I got into Pilates. Being better able to perform physically means less attention on that and more on the artistic quality.

And so with the gymnast. He or she is basically a performer of physical prowess. Pilates enhances that and takes it to a new level you never thought possible. So there is Pilates benefit to be had when applied to other physical arts and sporting activities to increase performance. That is the reason there are a number of professional athletes as well as professional teams as a whole unit who are endorsing Pilates for what they see as injury prevention, strength, flexibility, body and muscle rejuvenation, back strengthening and balance. The New Jersey Nets, Arizona Diamondbacks and several pro-golfers on the PGA tour are examples of those using Pilates for such reasons.

So the field of dancing gymnastics is an area where Pilates can really play a part in fine tuning an athlete or performer.

Louise Forscher is specifically trained to help dancers with Pilates as well as delivering the usual Pilates and Pilates for physical rehabilitation.
