Pilates Class

Generally when we speak of a Pilates class there are two types. With equipment such as on the Pilates reformer (See Pilates equipment) or on the mat.

Mat Pilates is not a downgrade from equipment. It was original stuff and in fact one of the reasons equipment was developed was to facilitate mat work.

Mat work is challenging. Most Pilates equipment exercises have their basis in mat work. With both mat or equipment you need to have your basics in, otherwise you are wasting your time.

Pilates is a mind body coordination and there are principles you need to learn to apply to your exercise. If you aren’t willing to do this forget it. No seriously. Pilates is all about how you do it, which brings up the questions: "Do I need a Pilates instructor or not?" and "What is a good Pilates instructor session ?"

1. You need the correct positioning of joints or parts of the body.

2. You need to know your core, the muscles involved and how to get them to work.

3. You need to know the most optimum ways to work certain muscles and what muscles to use when. So get some private lessons at least to start out with. Definitely if you are joining a Pilates class on the reformer and it is a good idea for a mat class too.

In class you don’t get individual attention so you need to know what you are doing. If you can find a good instructor who will run a basics class for people starting, go for it. Then you can flow into the next levels.

You can use a Pilates DVD or video however this does not replace the use of a competent instructor and a good class. There is great value in a Home Exercise Workout , but again most successfully done in conjunction with a good instructor.

If you are interested in becoming and instructor and want to know how to go about getting certified, go to Certification Pilates.
