Monthly Tips to Reach Your Ultimate Health

Today there is an overwhelming amount of exercise equipment including Pilates equipment on the market.

Some of the Pilates equipment is original from Joseph Pilates and some of it is not but lends itself to Pilates exercise with ease. Joseph Pilates himself was great at working out pieces of apparatus to do certain things and some of his things I have never heard of even as a trained Pilates instructor.

So how do you as a client know what is what. Well here are some of the major ones as I was taught it – both large and small.

Let’s start simple and move up.

The Mat – The most basic Pilates equipment, you need to perform exercises on the floor.

A Small Pillow – One you can move around to be thinner or fatter for support of tight neck and shoulders and used in certain exercises as needed.

Balls – About 40 centimeters or 16 inches circumference is great for rolling the pelvis on, keeping the inner thighs and pelvic floor working and joints in alignment. A bit larger is also used as well as tennis balls which are great for spot massage and for the feet.

Pilates Exercise Ball

– Big Ball – physioball, fitball is great for some exercises.

Basic items such as the mats and physioball can be purchase from Danskin at the link to the right:

Theraband – Stretchy bands – I use extra heavy and special heavy. Great for stretches, breathing and resistance.

Pilates Ring – also called the Magic Circle or Magic Ring – Definitely a Joseph Pilates invention for Pilates equipment. A tensioned ring used for upper body work, breathing and also for legs.

Pilates Reformer – A moving table off the ground sprung with springs underneath and ropes or straps attached to the table. A brilliant machine of Joseph Pilates.

Boxes and Boards – Go with the Pilates Reformer.

Trapezius Table – Also called a Cadillac – A table off the ground higher than a reformer with a metal frame above which is attached at each corner with various holes, loops, springs and an attached bar that looks like a shortened circus trapeze swing. This is another brilliant piece of Pilates equipment invented by Joseph Pilates, used for lower level, intermediate and more advanced work beyond the reformer.

Wunda Chair – Another by Joseph Pilates. A chair with a bar attached to springs. Not really for the absolute beginner.

The Barrel – Stepbarrel, half barrel. Great for all sorts of exercises. The Step Barrel does great things for the back. Foam Rollers – Great for stretching tight muscles.

So there is a general overview of Pilates equipment
